Avoiding Your Symptoms? ‘I’m Fine’ Might Be Costing You

Jul 15, 2025

We’ve all done it. Dismissed a symptom, ignored that gut feeling, or told ourselves it’s probably nothing.

A strange taste in your mouth, a cycle that’s more painful than usual, low energy that just won’t shift, a little bloating, some trouble sleeping… easy to brush off when life is busy. You tell yourself it’s stress, hormones, parenting, aging—anything but something to actually pay attention to.

But here’s the truth: symptoms are not random. They’re your body’s way of speaking to you—and when we repeatedly ignore them, the cost isn’t just discomfort. It can be long-term damage.

Why We Avoid Listening to Our Bodies

If you’ve been dismissed by a doctor, overwhelmed by information, or felt like your symptoms were too vague to matter, it’s completely natural to avoid diving deeper. It’s protective. You don’t want to be brushed off again—or worse, find out something is seriously wrong.

But ignoring doesn’t equal safety. It equals delay. And delay can lead to outcomes that were preventable—had you listened earlier.

What starts as fatigue can evolve into burnout. What seems like just a bad period could be something far more complex. What feels like bloating or poor sleep could be your body waving a red flag.

Common Signals Women Often Ignore:

  • Constant exhaustion despite sleeping
  • Painful or heavy periods
  • Ongoing bloating, reflux, or digestive discomfort
  • Mood swings, brain fog, or anxiety
  • Hair thinning or brittle nails
  • Changes in blood pressure or body temperature
  • Subtle but persistent pain or tightness

You don’t need to be a hypochondriac to be curious. You just need to pay attention.

Reframing Health Responsibility

Avoidance isn’t laziness—it’s often fear. But the longer we delay action, the more we risk waking up to a health crisis that could have been prevented.

Instead of asking, “Is this serious?” try asking:
👉 “If my body is trying to help me, what is it asking for right now?”

Responsibility doesn’t have to feel like a burden. It can feel like empowerment.

Listening to your body early is a skill—and it can be life-changing.
