Period Pain, Heavy Periods, PMS, PMDD, Blood Clots—What Your Period Symptoms Are Trying to Tell You

We’ve been taught to view period symptoms as a monthly nuisance—something to manage, medicate, or just get through. But what if those symptoms are actually your body’s way of speaking to you?

Your period can be one of the clearest indicators of what’s going on beneath the surface, especially when you know what the signals mean. Here's a breakdown of six common period symptoms and what your body might be trying to tell you:

1. Heavy Periods

Changing your tampon, pad, or cup more often than every 2 hours—or bleeding for more than 7 days—can be a sign of excess estrogen. This may be related to stress, sluggish detox pathways (liver/gut), or fibroids. It’s your body saying: “I’m overloaded—help me clear the excess.”

2. Light Periods

A bleed that lasts less than 3 days often points to low estrogen, which is commonly caused by under-eating, over-exercising, or thyroid dysfunction. Your body may be shifting into survival mode and conserving energy by dialling down reproductive hormones.

3. Large Clots or Brown Spotting

Clots larger than a 20c coin or spotting before your period can signal low progesterone (and usually higher estrogen). This often stems from poor ovulation, stress, or irregular rhythms in your cycle. Your hormones are out of sync—and your body is trying to restore balance.

4. Painful Periods

Cramps are caused by high prostaglandins—compounds that trigger uterine contractions. While painkillers may block them, they don’t solve the root issue: inflammation, stress, mineral deficiencies, or possible endometriosis. Your body may be asking for deeper care, not just symptom relief.

5. PMS or PMDD

Mood swings, anxiety, or rage in the second half of your cycle can indicate low progesterone and unstable blood sugar. Hormones don’t operate in isolation—if your blood sugars are peaking and crashing, so are your moods.

6. Irregular Cycles

If your cycle is shorter than 21 days or longer than 35, it might be a sign of poor communication between your brain and ovaries, often driven by disrupted circadian rhythms, stress, or underlying conditions like PCOS. Your body is telling you: “I’ve lost my rhythm—help me reset.”

The most powerful thing you can do is listen. Your symptoms aren't random—they’re signals. And those signals are often the earliest indicators that something deeper needs support.

Instead of reaching for a quick fix, consider asking: What is this symptom trying to tell me? Am I stressed? Under-nourished? Disconnected from my cycle’s rhythm?

Often, the solution isn’t more effort—it’s more alignment.
